PortAventura World has announced a temporary closure starting this Monday due to ongoing heavy rainfall and flooding in the region. This precautionary measure, prompted by severe weather conditions, aims to ensure the safety of visitors and staff and will remain in place until authorities lift weather-related restrictions.

Temporary Closure of PortAventura World for Safety Reasons

In response to the forecast of torrential rains in the province, PortAventura World closed its doors on Monday. This decision followed extensive mobility restrictions and safety advisories issued by Catalonia’s Civil Protection Authority. According to a spokesperson from the resort, the closure prioritizes the safety of all visitors and staff. “Our highest priority is to ensure the safety of all our visitors and employees,” they told EFE. The park will only consider reopening once authorities lift the weather-related restrictions.

Extensive mobility restrictions in Tarragona

The Generalitat de Cataluña has issued broad mobility restrictions across nine districts in the Tarragona province to safeguard public safety. These restrictions took effect overnight on Monday and are expected to continue at least through Tuesday midday. The affected districts include Terra Alta, Ribera d’Ebre, Baix Ebre, Montsiá, Baix Penedès, Priorat, Alt Camp, and Baix Camp. Residents in these areas have been advised to limit their movements and avoid non-essential travel. This measure aims to reduce accidents caused by hazardous weather conditions and alleviate the pressure on emergency services.

Suspension of Educational and Sports Activities

In addition to mobility restrictions, the Catalan government has temporarily suspended classes in schools and universities as well as sporting activities in the affected districts. This decision applies through Monday and Tuesday morning to protect students in flood-prone areas from the risks associated with traveling to school. Sports events and practices have also been postponed to safeguard all involved.

Minister Núria Parlón: Background and Details of the Measures

The announcement came on Sunday from Núria Parlón, Catalonia’s Minister of Interior and Public Safety, following a meeting with the technical committee overseeing flood risk management. Parlón emphasized that the region is in the “final phase” of the severe weather period, necessitating heightened caution. The government resolution suspending school and university attendance, along with a recommendation for non-essential workers to work from home, aims to minimize the storm’s impact. The minister stressed that these actions are essential to keeping public risk as low as possible.

PortAventura World: Closure in Compliance with Safety Regulations

In the past, PortAventura World has taken similar actions to ensure visitor safety during crisis situations. The resort urges visitors to follow updates and announcements through the official website and social media channels. Once weather conditions improve and restrictions are lifted, the park will reopen and keep guests informed accordingly.
