The comprehensive investigation into allegations of bullying and violence in the workplace at Plopsaland De Panne has uncovered no criminal offenses. According to the West Flanders division of the Ghent labor prosecutor's office, a thorough review determined that the accusations did not meet the criteria for a criminal offense. Reports of alleged incidents were contradicted by statements from other employees.

Origin of the Allegations and Start of the Investigation

The investigation began in February 2023, following accusations made by former employees in the press, who alleged that former CEO Steve Van den Kerkhof had bullied and used violence against employees at the workplace. At the time, Van den Kerkhof was no longer employed by Plopsaland. The labor prosecutor's office launched the investigation on its own initiative, as allegations of this nature are taken seriously.

Scope of the Investigation

During the investigation, around 20 direct employees of Steve Van den Kerkhof were interviewed by the police. Numerous communication records, such as emails and WhatsApp messages between management and staff, were also examined as part of the evidence. These communications helped clarify the situation. Additionally, the “Workplace Well-being Inspection Service” conducted an on-site check to ensure that regulations concerning psychosocial risks were being followed within the company.

Allegations Disproven by Witness Testimonies

On Tuesday morning, the labor prosecutor's office issued an official press release stating that no criminal offenses were found to have occurred at Plopsaland in connection with the allegations. According to the labor prosecutor, all legal elements required for a criminal charge were absent in this case. The serious allegations made in the media were disproven by other employees' testimonies and by the communication records in the file. The inspection service also found no violations of workplace safety or psychosocial risk management protocols.

Steve Van den Kerkhof’s Response

Steve Van den Kerkhof expressed relief at the investigation’s findings. In a brief statement, he said, “I am pleased that my name has been cleared by the independent investigation. I have not been found guilty of any toxic leadership or inappropriate behavior. I now close this chapter and focus on the exciting professional challenges ahead of me.”

The investigation has been concluded, with no negative findings regarding the psychosocial practices at Plopsaland De Panne.
