The Liseberg amusement park in Gothenburg, Sweden, is planning a special event on September 3: an attempt to set a world record for the highest average age on a roller coaster ride. Adventurous seniors aged 70 and above are being sought to conquer the Dive Coaster Valkyria.

Record Attempt at Liseberg: Seniors on Valkyria

On Tuesday, September 3, Liseberg invites brave seniors to participate in a world record attempt. The goal is to achieve the highest average age on a roller coaster ride. Valkyria, a roller coaster known for its vertical drop of 50 meters and speeds of up to 105 km/h, will be the stage for this event. Participants aged 70 and above who are ready to take on this challenge are encouraged to join.

Why Liseberg Is Focusing on Seniors

Mårten Westlund, PR and Communications Manager at Liseberg, emphasizes the significance of the event: “We want to celebrate every senior's right to have fun and experience excitement in life. The most important thing is to have fun together and to show that the amusement park is for all age groups.” Westlund highlights the positive health effects associated with shared joy and excitement.

Background and Importance of the Record Attempt

The saying “80 is the new 60” underscores the increasing life expectancy and active lifestyles of many seniors. The current record for the highest average age on a roller coaster ride stands at 75.25 years, set in 2003 in Blackpool, United Kingdom. Liseberg aims to break this record and make a statement that amusement parks are suitable for all ages.

Valkyria: The Challenge in Detail

Valkyria, a dive coaster, is one of Liseberg’s most impressive attractions. Standing at 47 meters tall and reaching a top speed of 105 km/h, it offers a thrilling ride experience. The 50-meter drop, plunging into an underground tunnel, and the total track length of approximately 750 meters provide plenty of adrenaline and excitement. The ride takes about one minute and 30 seconds.

The Importance of Shared Experiences

According to Westlund, feelings of joy and excitement never grow old. Studies show that shared experiences can have positive health impacts. With this record attempt, Liseberg not only hopes to set a new world record, but also to emphasize the important role, the amusement park can play in the lives of older people.

Call for Participation

Liseberg is calling on all adventurous seniors aged 70 and above to sign up for the record attempt. “We’re excited to see if we can fill a Valkyria train with 18 seats of thrill-seeking seniors for an exhilarating ride,” says Westlund. The record attempt will take place on Tuesday, September 3, at Liseberg amusement park in Gothenburg.
