Ten months after the tragic fire at Oceana, Liseberg has achieved a significant milestone. With demolition and cleanup now complete, the rebuilding process is set to begin. Newly released images reveal changes to the attraction tower and showcase cutting-edge technology for the water slides. The grand reopening, planned for late 2025, promises an unparalleled experience in Scandinavia.
Demolition Completed: Paving the Way for Reconstruction
Following the devastating fire earlier in 2024, which caused extensive damage and claimed the life of an employee, Liseberg has now completed all demolition work. The final glulam beams were removed from the roof last week, and the pool area has been fully cleared. This progress marks a crucial transition to the next phase of construction, backed by the Liseberg board’s approval to proceed with the necessary agreements for completing the new water park.
While the reconstruction largely follows the original plans, Liseberg is implementing several upgrades to modernize and enhance the attraction. These changes are designed to improve both functionality and overall guest experience.
Safety and Design in Focus: Innovations for the Future
One of the key updates involves the water slides, which will now feature new fire-resistant technology to ensure the highest safety standards. Additionally, the attraction tower, an iconic feature of the water park, will be given a brighter color scheme to better integrate with Gothenburg’s urban landscape.
Liseberg’s CEO, Andreas Andersen, emphasized that this opportunity allows not only for enhanced safety measures but also for aesthetic improvements that align with contemporary expectations. The park is determined to move forward efficiently to meet its ambitious timeline.
An Ambitious Timeline: The Next Steps
In February 2025, new glulam beams will be installed to provide the structural foundation for the rebuilding efforts. In the spring, the water attractions, which are the heart of Oceana, will be installed. If all goes as planned, the entire structure should be weatherproof by the end of summer 2025, allowing interior work to continue uninterrupted.
Although the project is inherently complex and susceptible to external factors, Liseberg remains optimistic about opening Oceana by the end of 2025.
The Dimensions of Oceana: A Water Experience for All
Oceana will set new standards with a total area of 13,600 square meters. The bathing area spans nearly 6,000 square meters indoors and 4,000 square meters outdoors, offering a wide range of activities. Highlights include four large water slides, a wave pool, a family river, and interactive water features tailored to visitors of all ages.
The new water park will also feature amenities such as a café, a restaurant, and a shop to enhance the guest experience. Oceana is designed to accommodate up to 1,750 visitors during the summer months, with a reduced capacity of 1,250 during cooler seasons.
A Boost for Gothenburg’s Appeal
The reconstruction of Oceana will not only elevate Liseberg’s offerings but also enhance Gothenburg’s appeal as a travel destination. Kurt Eliasson, chairman of the Liseberg board, highlighted that Oceana will be a significant addition to the city’s diverse range of attractions. This project is expected to draw new visitors and strengthen the region’s reputation for exceptional leisure experiences.
When completed, Oceana will stand out as one of Scandinavia’s most modern water parks, blending state-of-the-art technology with thrilling attractions and thoughtful design. Visitors can look forward to an extraordinary experience that combines excitement and relaxation in equal measure.
