On November 28, 2024, Danish ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen visited LEGOLAND® Billund and other iconic LEGO® locations in the city of bricks. Through engaging talks, interactive building activities, and a heartwarming Christmas initiative, he inspired families and children by connecting the wonders of space exploration with playful creativity.

Andreas Mogensen Brings Space Exploration to Billund

Billund, the home of LEGO® bricks, welcomed a special guest on Thursday: ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen spent the day at LEGOLAND®, LEGO® House, and the LEGO® Campus. The goal of his visit was to inspire children and their families to explore the world of space through creative activities and educational talks.

During his presentations, Mogensen shared captivating insights from his experiences in space, highlighting how scientific problem-solving and creativity—key aspects of LEGO® play—also play a crucial role in space exploration. A standout moment of the day was his participation in the “Build the Change” activity at LEGO® House, where he worked with children to construct a sustainable spacecraft. This hands-on demonstration beautifully illustrated the intersection of space exploration and playful innovation.

Another highlight was the creation of his very own LEGO® Minifigure, now on display at the LEGO® House store. Visitors can view this unique figure, which underscores the connection between LEGO® and the inspiring realm of space science.

“Build to Give”: Spreading Holiday Cheer with LEGO® Hearts

A key feature of Mogensen’s visit was his involvement in LEGO®’s global “Build to Give” campaign, hosted this year at LEGOLAND®. Alongside 15 families, chosen through a draw among LEGOLAND® season pass holders, he helped construct the first LEGO® Christmas heart of the season.

Children and parents had the rare opportunity to ask Mogensen questions about his work in space and take photos with him, creating unforgettable memories. This activity not only marked the start of the Christmas season at LEGOLAND®, but also highlighted the inspiring bond between space exploration and LEGO® creativity.

LEGOLAND® Director Michael Ottesen expressed his excitement about the visit, stating, “Andreas Mogensen is an ambassador for creativity and science. We were honored to welcome him here and to see him inspire families and children through his passion for space exploration and LEGO® building. As a figure already featured in our Miniland®, his personal presence added an extra layer of inspiration.”

A Global Mission with LEGO® Hearts

The “Build to Give” campaign will officially launch as part of the “Jul i LEGOLAND®” celebrations on Saturday, November 30. Visitors can build their own LEGO® Christmas hearts and share them on social media using the hashtag #BuildToGive. For every heart shared, LEGO® will donate a LEGO® set to children in need around the world.

This initiative reflects LEGO®’s commitment to combining creativity and social responsibility. Mogensen’s participation emphasized the importance of using play to inspire and make a positive impact globally.

Inspiration for Families and LEGO® Enthusiasts

Andreas Mogensen’s visit delighted not only the families who participated in the activities, but also the 350 season pass holders and LEGO® employees who had the chance to meet him. His ability to connect the wonders of space with the possibilities of LEGO® play left a lasting impression on everyone involved.

The day served as a powerful example of how science and play can work together to encourage children and adults alike to explore, create, and enjoy shared experiences.
