Traffic Infrastructure at Europa-Park: Sustainable Solutions for Visitors and Residents

Europa-Park, along with the municipalities of Rust and Ringsheim, is committed to sustainable traffic solutions that benefit both visitors and residents. With the Traffic Master Plan initiated in 2017, measures are being implemented step by step to ease traffic in the village of Rust, promote public transport, and enhance pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure. Key projects have already been completed, while others are currently underway or planned for the future.

Progress in Implementing the Traffic Master Plan

In November 2023, the municipality of Rust and Europa-Park presented the results of the Traffic Master Plan during a public consultation. This plan, developed since 2017, serves as the foundation for comprehensive infrastructure improvements. Shortly after the presentation, the first phase of construction began. By winter 2023/2024, major initiatives had been completed, including the bypass around the main parking lot, a new access road to the Camp Resort, and significant enhancements to cycling infrastructure.

These measures are already showing positive results. Traffic no longer flows through agricultural roads, and long-distance buses no longer pass through the village center, significantly relieving congestion. The comfort of cyclists and pedestrians has also improved thanks to better routes and infrastructure. In 2024, the construction of a new long-distance bus terminal is expected to further enhance bus travel convenience.

Phase Two: Traffic Calming and Modernization

The second phase of the Traffic Master Plan focuses on upgrades along Rheinweg and surrounding areas. This includes the installation of new water and sewage systems to disconnect Europa-Park from the municipal network, significantly reducing strain on local infrastructure. Additionally, Rheinweg is being redesigned as a traffic-calmed zone with improved accessibility for public transportation.

Parking infrastructure is also being modernized. The “Alter Festplatz” parking lot now provides 180 spaces with a maximum two-hour parking limit, with exceptions for restaurant guests and local associations. Construction work at the “Neuer Festplatz” will begin in January 2025, creating 170 parking spaces with a three-hour time limit.

Expansion of the Cycling Network to Zuckerbrücke

Enhancing cycling infrastructure is a key aspect of the plan. A new bike route is being built along the former landfill site, connecting the “Neuer Festplatz” to Zuckerbrücke. This route, running away from vehicular traffic, offers a safe and scenic option for cyclists traveling through the region.

Sustainable Developments at the Camp Resort

The Camp Resort is seeing significant upgrades with the construction of a new restaurant and a modern parking garage. The garage, designed to hold 580 vehicles, features a sustainable timber facade and a rooftop solar panel array. These projects aim to expand capacity while aligning with the resort’s commitment to eco-friendly development.

Long-Term Plans: Phase Three of the Master Plan

The third phase of the Traffic Master Plan focuses on diversifying parking options along K 5349, extending to the western section of the ZVT-Ostareal. For the first time, areas within the municipality of Ringsheim are being incorporated into the planning process.

The newly constructed Südspange, a road extension, already improves connections between Europa-Park and the Ringsheim train station, facilitating better access for visitors traveling by train. Ringsheim Mayor Pascal Weber emphasized the significance of these efforts, noting that incorporating Ringsheim’s land into the plan enables a comprehensive approach that supports both motorized traffic and sustainable mobility options.

Future Prospects and Transparency

Rust and Ringsheim, together with Europa-Park, underline the importance of transparent communication regarding the Master Plan's progress. Once detailed plans for upcoming phases are available, they will be presented in public forums. The overarching goals remain clear: reducing the impact of motorized traffic, protecting sensitive areas west of Rust, and further strengthening public transport, pedestrian, and cycling infrastructure. These initiatives aim to enhance traffic flow in the region sustainably while providing long-term benefits for both visitors and local residents.
