In an unexpected yet methodically planned training scenario, young Swiss skiing talents recently conducted an intensive training session on the “Silver Star”, one of Europe’s largest steel roller coasters located in Europa-Park. Guided by the esteemed training team of Ski World Cup winner Didier Plaschy and Super Combination World Champion Daniel Albrecht, breathing exercises were performed in the curves of the 73-meter-high roller coaster.

Innovation in the Training Process

Breathing technique holds a key role in skiing, where precise and controlled actions are necessary in every turn and jump. The choice of the “Silver Star” as a training venue allows the U14 and U16 juniors to specifically enhance their breathing under the unique conditions of a roller coaster ride. Plaschy underscores the importance of these exercises, emphasizing the advantage of practicing various breathing patterns in curves with intense G-forces, which would be hard to replicate on ski slopes.

Mental Preparation and Codeword

In addition to the physical component, mental training was not neglected. Together with mental coach Jean-Pierre Bringhen, the young skiers developed a codeword, “Silver Star”, to recall during training and competitions. It serves as a reminder of the learned techniques and the experience on the roller coaster to effectively apply them in practice.

National and Regional Support

The training participants, aged 12 to 15 years, typically hail from Upper Valais, where they train at regional performance centers near the cities of Brig and Visp. With a total of 30 such centers in Switzerland, including eight operated by Ski Valais, the young talents receive extensive support. From the age of 16, they have the opportunity to enter FIS races and be nominated for the Swiss Ski national team.

Future Preparation through Extraordinary Measures

Plaschy and Albrecht are committed to optimally preparing their protégés for a successful future in skiing. The roller coaster training not only serves to improve breathing techniques but also strengthens the athletes’ mental fortitude and serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of precise breath control.

Conclusion: An Unusual but Effective Approach

Although it may initially appear unconventional, the training on the “Silver Star” roller coaster proves to be an innovative and effective approach for promoting young ski talents. The combination of physical training and mental preparation, enriched by the unique experience of a roller coaster ride, promises enduring positive effects for the athletes. The learned techniques and the memorable connection to the “Silver Star” will assist the juniors in continuously enhancing their performance on the ski slopes and effectively preparing for future competitions. Overall, this innovative training concept enriches the training routine of young skiers and sets new impulses for the future athletic development of the talents.
