Europa-Park is increasingly focusing on sustainability in its gastronomy. With measures such as reusable cups and local suppliers, the amusement park demonstrates how environmental protection can be effectively implemented.
Introduction of Reusable Cups
Since March 2023, Europa-Park has exclusively used reusable cups and completely eliminated single-use cups. These cups are made from an environmentally friendly plastic that does not contain harmful substances or plasticizers. This measure exceeds legal requirements, as confirmed by the regulatory authority. Within the first six weeks, approximately two tons of waste were saved through the introduction of reusable cups. Claudia Weck, Project Manager in Food and Beverage, explains that the annual cleaning of over two million cups is managed in collaboration with Cup Concept. This company collects the used cups three times a week, cleans them, and returns the fresh ones. The short transport routes also improve the CO2 balance. Visitors can return the cups at collection points throughout the park or via deposit return machines. The deposit can optionally be donated to charitable organizations.
A Holistic Approach to Waste Reduction
Europa-Park's sustainability measures are not limited to cups. The restaurants have always used glass and porcelain to reduce waste. Packaging is avoided wherever possible. Honey and jam at the hotel breakfast are offered without packaging, and goods are preferably delivered in bulk. The park also uses reusable boxes instead of cardboard for deliveries. Surplus food is donated to social institutions instead of being discarded.
Promotion of Regional Products
Another focus of Europa-Park's sustainability strategy is regionality. Over 80 percent of the food at the breakfast buffets comes from suppliers within a 100-kilometer radius. This highlights the importance of regionality for the Mack family, the park's operators. Seasonal products are preferred, and the park supports trading partners who provide good working conditions. Europa-Park's sustainable practices serve as a model for other amusement parks, which look to its solutions for inspiration.
