On the first Advent, coinciding this year with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Europa-Park witnessed a special event. The “Church at Europa-Park” opened its doors for a unique inclusive Advent service, organized in close cooperation with the inclusion representatives of the Evangelical State Church of Baden and the Department of Inclusion-Generations in the Archdiocese of Freiburg. This service, attended by more than 200 participants, not only set a sign for inclusion and compassion but also provided a platform for shared contemplation and pre-Christmas ambiance.

Harmony in Music and Community

In the festively decorated 4-star Superior Hotel Santa Isabel, visitors gathered under the guidance of Deacons Andrea Ziegler and Thomas Schneeberger. The musical accompaniment for the service was provided by the inclusive choir and the Orff group of the Johannes-Diakonie Mosbach, led by Peter Bechtold. The approximately 25 musicians offered a mix of traditional and modern Christmas songs, inviting participation and warming the hearts of the attendees.

Accessibility: A Core Concern

In a remarkable step towards ensuring accessibility, the service was conducted in simple language and supported by two sign language interpreters. A specially installed induction loop also allowed visitors with hearing aids to follow the service without difficulty. Another highlight was the provision of texts in Braille, enabling blind and visually impaired participants to fully engage in the service.

Community After the Service

Following the service, the Mack family, owners of Europa-Park, invited attendees to a convivial gathering over coffee and cake. This provided an opportunity for stimulating conversations and deepening the sense of community. This gathering symbolized more than just a cozy get-together; it represented the coming together of a congregation that bridges differences and places inclusion at the forefront.

A Model for Future Events

This inclusive Advent service stands as a remarkable example of implementing inclusion in religious and social events. Through careful planning and execution, this occasion demonstrated that accessibility and inclusion can and should be integral parts of any event. It serves as an inspiration for future events and shows that the church and communities can work together to create an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere.

Conclusion: A Step Towards a More Inclusive Society

The Advent service at Europa-Park was not just a celebration of the first Advent but also a strong signal for the importance of inclusion in our society. The combination of music, language, and community created a space where all people, regardless of their abilities or limitations, felt welcome and valued. In a time when division and exclusion are all too common, this service showed that togetherness in diversity and respect is possible and desirable. It was a shining example of how the Advent season – a time of expectation and togetherness – can and should be made accessible to everyone.
