Europa-Park is nearing its 50th anniversary. From initially welcoming 250,000 guests in 1975 to attracting over six million visitors in 2023, the park has become an international magnet.

From Vision to Reality: The Founding of Europa-Park

The story of Europa-Park began with an inspiring journey taken by Franz Mack and his son Roland through the USA in 1972. Their vision is to create their own amusement park to showcase their rides. After facing several challenges in finding a location, they chose Rust as the final site and opened the park's gates in 1975, spanning 16 hectares.

Rise and Expansion: The Early Years (1975–1985)

Europa-Park's early years were marked by growing visitor numbers and park development. Despite initial skepticism, the Mack family created a world that combined entertainment, culture, and thrills. The opening of the Italian-themed area in 1982 was a significant milestone.

European Flair and High Standards (1985–1996)

During this period, the park expanded its European theme concept, adding areas like Holland, England, and France. Europa-Park's quality was recognized in 1990 by the Stiftung Warentest, which rated it “very good,” underscoring the park's high standards.

Transformation into a Short Break Destination (1995–2012)

The opening of the “El Andaluz” hotel in 1995 marked a new era for Europa-Park as a short-break destination. More hotels followed, and the park expanded its offerings with a winter season. MackMedia was founded in 2002 to digitize the park's entertainment experience.

Innovation and Recognition (2009–2019)

This period saw significant expansions, including the Icelandic-themed area and the “WODAN” wooden roller coaster. In 2011, Roland Mack was appointed president of the IAAPA, the global amusement industry association. A special highlight was the opening of the two-star “Ammolite” restaurant in 2014.

Progress and Expansion (2019–2024)

The most recent developments include the opening of the Rulantica water world, the launch of the “Eatrenalin” futuristic restaurant, and surpassing the six million visitor mark. Various awards and recognitions have also been bestowed on the park.

Looking to the Future: Innovation and Generational Change

The Mack family continues to focus on quality and innovation. With Michael and Thomas Mack in the executive management, the park is continuously expanding, and new attractions are being developed.

A Striking Comparison: 1975 vs. 2024

Growing from a 16-hectare area to 95 hectares, Europa-Park has seen tremendous development over nearly five decades. The number of employees rose from 50 to 4,750, and the number of attractions increased from 15 to over 100.
