Laurent Knopf – A Craftsman with Decades of Expertise at Europa-Park
Laurent Knopf started his career as an upholsterer over 45 years ago and is now one of the few in Germany who still practices this traditional craft. Since October 2008, he has applied his skills at Europa-Park, where he specializes in restoring and maintaining furniture and custom upholstery. His extensive experience is crucial to preserving the historic and premium furnishings that give the park its unique character.
Restoring Historic Furniture in Europa-Park’s Hotels
Knopf frequently works on valuable furniture pieces in Europa-Park’s hotels, including the El Andaluz and Bell Rock. Often, his tasks involve restoring chairs and armchairs that use traditional materials like horsehair. Recently, he worked on a damaged Régence-style chair, dedicating ten hours to its complete restoration. Using precise techniques, Knopf carefully rebuilt the chair layer by layer, securing the horsehair upholstery by hand with needle and thread. His work preserves the historic charm of these pieces, ensuring that each restoration maintains the original style and integrity.
Upholstery and Maintenance for Rides and Events at Europa-Park
Knopf’s work extends beyond furniture to various rides and events throughout Europa-Park. For example, he regularly reupholsters the padded parts of the WODAN – Timburcoaster wagons, including seats and backrests, to withstand the high level of use and provide guests with comfortable rides. Knopf’s expertise also enhances other attractions, like the “Volo da Vinci” ride, and contributes to shows such as the Europa-Park Dinner Show and Ice Show, where his craftsmanship is seamlessly integrated.
Creative Problem-Solving and Custom Solutions
Knopf’s projects require not only skilled craftsmanship but also creativity and adaptability. Every task he undertakes demands unique, tailored solutions. For instance, he frequently restores and reupholsters leather armchairs, such as one recently completed for the Hotel El Andaluz, where he replaced and reworked the worn leather and padding. His custom solutions maintain the distinctive character and quality of each item, reflecting the high standards expected at Europa-Park.
A Wide Range of Projects Throughout the Europa-Park Resort
Knopf’s work takes him to all corners of Europa-Park’s extensive resort, including restaurants, event venues, and other attractions. His expertise is visible everywhere, from rides and performances to hotels and dining area furnishings. The comfort and quality enjoyed by guests are a direct result of Knopf’s commitment to his craft and his efforts to maintain Europa-Park’s high standards.
An Unusual Assignment: A Cushioned Coffin for “Traumatica”
One of Knopf’s most unique assignments came from the Halloween event “Traumatica.” Europa-Park commissioned him to upholster a coffin for the horror-themed attraction – a first in his career. After completing the project, Knopf tested the comfort of his work by lying in the coffin himself, finding it surprisingly cozy. This assignment highlights the range and adaptability of his work, from furniture restoration to creating unique event pieces.
