Europa-Park in Southern Baden is not only a place full of attractions and adventures but also an impressive example of sustainability and connection to nature. The park stands out with its lush green spaces, rare plant species, and extensive ecological projects.
Diverse Flora and Fauna
Europa-Park covers 95 hectares and hosts 5,000 trees of 400 different species. The Rulantica Water World, opened in 2019, has further enriched the park’s natural landscape. In total, 2,000 trees, 18,000 wild shrubs, and 60,000 flowers have been newly planted. Additionally, 200 nesting boxes and eight bee colonies with 50,000 bees each provide a retreat for numerous animals. A drainage basin has also been transformed into a natural habitat for small animals.
Sustainable Irrigation and Maintenance
A computer-controlled irrigation system waters 80% of the park’s plants. Exotic tree species such as trees of heaven, sweetgum trees, and sequoias, as well as 500- to 800-year-old olive trees protected by heating coils in winter, find ideal growing conditions here. The park’s castle grounds, with their old trees, are another highlight of the green spaces.
Ecological Diversity and Environmental Protection
The park’s nature projects significantly contribute to ecological diversity. The extensive green areas and sustainable measures create a pleasant climate enjoyed by both visitors and animals. These initiatives also promote environmental awareness among visitors.
Gardening Team’s Commitment
More than 80 employees of the park’s own gardening team take care of the green areas daily. They use several flatbed and electric vehicles, work in greenhouses, and run their nursery. Gardeners often start their work as early as 6 a.m. to avoid disturbing visitors. Special attention is given to planting rare tree species.
Nature and Sustainability in the Hotels
The hotels and other areas of Europa-Park are also lushly planted. Insect hotels provide shelter for wild bees, wasps, bumblebees, beetles, and other small creatures, further promoting biodiversity.
Deep-Rooted Sustainability
Europa-Park is located in the warmest region of Germany, Southern Baden. Sustainability is deeply embedded in the DNA of this family-run business. Ann-Kathrin Mack, architect and proxy holder, initiated the “Ecology Working Group” in 2015. She emphasizes, “Sustainability is inherently part of the DNA of family businesses. We must always be aware that our actions have consequences for our children and grandchildren; therefore, we should handle our resources carefully.”
