The Black Forest is becoming more climate-resilient. As part of the fourth Black Forest Day, 1,000 new trees were planted in a forested area near Stollenbacher Hof in Oberried. This reforestation initiative was launched by the Freiburg-based family business HORL and supported by regional companies, including Europa-Park, JobRad, Mayka, Visual Statements, and ToutTerrain. The project aims to enhance ecological diversity while contributing to the long-term stabilization of forests in the region.
Collaboration with Experts and Regional Partners
The reforestation project was carried out in close partnership with the Haus der Natur Feldberg and the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald District Forestry Administration. This collaboration ensured a scientifically sound approach and a sustainable future for the newly planted trees. The chosen forest area had suffered significant damage from natural events. The Lothar storm in 1999 destroyed half of the dense spruce forest, and subsequent bark beetle infestations and storms further weakened the area.
Creating Climate-Resilient Forests
A key goal of the initiative was to establish a climate-resilient mountain mixed forest. Instead of relying on monocultural spruce plantations, which are increasingly vulnerable to drought, heat, and pests, the project introduced various tree species, including beech, Scots pine, silver fir, and sycamore maple. Forester Jens Strauch emphasized that these species are better adapted to the challenges of climate change. Their diversity enhances forest stability and provides habitats for a wide range of plant and animal species.
Regional Engagement and Volunteer Support
A total of 55 volunteers from the participating companies actively contributed to the planting effort. Their dedication highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in preserving the Black Forest. The saplings were carefully planted step by step until the goal of 1,000 trees was achieved. To protect the young silver firs, specialized terminal leader clips were installed. These clips prevent deer from nibbling on the tender tips of the trees, ensuring their growth is not hindered.
A Forest Area with a History in Oberried
The forest near Stollenbacher Hof in Oberried exemplifies the challenges facing many Black Forest areas. After the Lothar storm, the weakened tree population became increasingly susceptible to pests and storm damage, leading to further losses. The current reforestation effort aims to enhance the resilience of this area and provide greater stability over the long term. By introducing a mix of tree species, the new forest will be better equipped to face future challenges.

Now in its fourth year, Black Forest Day has become a significant event for promoting sustainable initiatives in the region. HORL and its partner companies hope to raise awareness about environmental protection through projects like this one and encourage other businesses to launch similar efforts. Timo Horl, the event’s initiator, emphasized that the Black Forest stands to benefit significantly from these regional efforts.
