Efteling has installed two megabatteries to relieve the strain on the power grid and supply energy to its new attractions. This step addresses the limited capacity of the regional power network.

Installation of the Megabatteries

This week, two large batteries arrived at Efteling, aimed at resolving the issue of power shortages. Due to the high load on the Brabant power grid, it was initially unclear if there was enough electricity to operate the new attraction, Danse Macabre, and the Efteling Grand Hotel. The installation of these energy storage systems provides the solution.

Project Costs and Placement

Announced earlier this year, this project involves an investment of 3 million euros. The batteries have now been delivered to Efteling and are housed in large shipping containers, which were placed in parking lot P2 with the help of a crane. The containers are attractively designed with green spaces and images of children playing, emphasizing the park’s sustainable image. The words “Efteling Nature Park” are displayed on them.

Self-Production and Energy Demand

Thanks to thousands of solar panels, the theme park generates about 35 percent of its own energy consumption on average. However, the park still requires a substantial amount of additional power. Efteling has a contract for a maximum of 5.5 megawatts, but this limit is nearly reached. As more areas in the park move away from using gas, the electricity demand naturally increases.

Additional Capacity through Batteries

A new medium-voltage cable, costing 1 million euros, brought little relief because the network provider Enexis had no more capacity in the power grid. However, the new batteries enable further expansions. Both batteries have a storage capacity of 3 megawatt-hours each. Excess energy generated by the solar panels can be stored in these batteries, reducing peak loads and improving grid stability.
