Since November 2023, the Piraña raft ride in Efteling has been undergoing extensive renovations. Visitors can look forward to an impressive redesign that combines South American flair with technical upgrades.

South American Atmosphere Reimagined

Built in 1983, the Piraña raft ride has been a staple attraction at Efteling. According to designer Karel Willemen, the current maintenance includes the creation of new rocks that enhance the ride's South American character. "We seized the opportunity to create something special. The rocks reflect the culture of indigenous peoples and invite discovery," Willemen explains.

Craftsmanship and Technology Combined

Mechanical engineer Michel Brok describes the work on the new rock formations as exemplary of the diverse craftsmanship on the Piraña construction site. One of the biggest challenges was replacing the pumping system, which moves 5,000 liters of water per second through the ride. "It was like solving a giant puzzle to get the system into the building, but we succeeded," says Brok.

In addition to the new pump system, the control panels, cables, and emergency lighting were also updated. Highlights of the renovation include the switch to LED lighting and the installation of new speakers and cameras along the 600-meter-long river. The surrounding greenery has also been redesigned.

Additional water features and surprises

Efteling has revisited and expanded upon the original designs by Ton van de Ven. These early sketches depict the river originating from the mouth of a water spout. "We introduced these water gods ten years ago, and now we've added more," says Karel Willemen. A large snake now adorns the Piraña's facade, surprising riders with an unexpected water spray.

Reopening Just in Time for the Summer Holidays

The renovation work on the Piraña raft ride is scheduled to be completed by June 28, 2024. Starting June 29, visitors can experience the new features. The water volume will be adjusted seasonally, so riders will get soaked in the summer and only lightly splashed in the winter.
