One of Efteling Theme Park's most beloved rides, the twin wooden racer roller coaster "Joris en de Draak", is set for a major renovation project. Spanning several months, this initiative promises to revitalize the attraction for years to come.

Detailed Planning and Background

The process started back in 2022 when select parts of the roller coaster were replaced with high-quality hardwoods and, in specific curves, with steel. This early intervention was just a precursor to what was yet to come.

For 2023 and 2024, the park plans to merge two maintenance phases. Robin van Dongen, the project manager overseeing the renovations, explained the plan: "By combining these maintenance years, we can streamline preparations and permissions, leading to cost savings." According to the timeline, work kicks off right after the Dutch autumn holidays on October 30th and stretches until the end of April 2024, with a brief opening hiatus during the Christmas holidays.

Innovation and Technique: The Retracking

Central to the renovation is the so-called "retracking." This process involves exchanging track parts to enhance the coaster's longevity and minimize future maintenance. Van Dongen detailed the approach: "Especially in places where the track undergoes varying forces, we're using a specialized hardwood known as Iron Wood."

More Than Just Tracks: Comprehensive Improvements

Beyond retracking, a myriad of other enhancements are underway. The facade of the station building is getting a fresh coat of paint, medallions are being decorated and shaded, and the engine house is receiving a new roof. Other smaller maintenance actions include sandblasting and coating the entrance gates and taking care of the victory banners.

The external area and the plaza are also getting facelifts. "The 'Kabinet der Strijdlustigen', the thematic cabinet, and other areas like the wooden pathway and the moor are being renovated," stated van Dongen. Additionally, the pavement around the attraction's plaza is being renewed with a focus on accessibility.

A Glimpse into the Future

As fans eagerly await the reopening, expectations are soaring. By the end of April, "Joris en de Draak" is anticipated to reopen for new adventures, stronger and better than ever before.

Overall, this extensive renovation project underscores Efteling's commitment to always providing top-notch attractions and an unforgettable experience for its visitors. It's exciting to ponder what the future holds for "Joris en de Draak" and the entire park.
