On October 31, 2024, Efteling opened the doors to its highly anticipated new attraction, “Danse Macabre.” After an intensive preparation period, the eighth and final episode of the Making-of series offers an inside look at the final touches leading up to the grand opening. It captures the reactions of the first guests as they experience the spooky ambiance of Huyverwoud and the thrilling attraction.

Great Anticipation and Positive Guest Reactions

Many guests had been eagerly awaiting this opening, with some even anticipating it since the farewell to the beloved “Spookslot.” Early on the morning of October 31, the first visitors gathered at Efteling’s entrance, excited to experience the attraction. After their first journey through the eerie world of “Danse Macabre,” they expressed their enthusiasm, praising the attraction’s design, themed area, special dining options, and new souvenirs. Comments like “The best attraction in the world!” and “Incredible atmosphere” reflected high satisfaction. This excitement led many guests to line up for repeat rides, eager to relive the experience.

The Final Steps to Opening Danse Macabre

The eighth episode of the “Efteling Making-of: Danse Macabre” series reveals the last-minute preparations made by the Efteling staff who embody the fictional “Charlatan family,” guiding guests through the shadowy realms of Huyverwoud and the Abdij. Under the leadership of Michelle Jansen, the attraction’s Team Lead, team members received specially designed costumes made from recycled Efteling uniforms. This sustainable choice reinforces environmental responsibility and symbolizes the cast members’ belonging to the “Charlatan family.” Final preparations included tasks such as clearing autumn leaves, placing the “Kabinet der Vermissen,” and adding final touches of paint. Jansen proudly reflected on her team’s dedication and the attention to detail that went into these final steps.

Employee Reflections and the Project’s Importance

On the opening day, several Efteling employees were stationed in Huyverwoud to observe the initial reactions from guests. Designer Jeroen Verheij shared his anticipation of seeing how visitors would respond to the attraction, while construction manager Henk Schellekens viewed Danse Macabre as the crowning achievement of his 33-year career with the park. Project coordinator Loes van Gils highlighted the importance of the project for Efteling and acknowledged the numerous staff members who contributed to making Danse Macabre a reality. Strategic project manager Tim Nusselein expressed confidence that the thorough preparations would ensure a smooth experience for visitors.

Exclusive Videoland Short Film: “The Fate of the Charlatans”

Alongside the Making-of series, which is available on YouTube and Videoland, Efteling offers an exclusive short film for Videoland subscribers: “Danse Macabre: The Fate of the Charlatans.” The film tells the dark story of Virginie and Otto Charlatan, who settle in Huyverwoud where they discover the graves of conductor Joseph Charlatan and his orchestra members. These musicians mysteriously disappeared following a famous music competition. The short film uncovers the link between the Charlatans and the sinister fate of the musicians and hints at the mysterious role of a black kitten in the Charlatans’ destiny, adding another, chilling layer to the “Danse Macabre” experience.
