Efteling fans can look forward to an updated version of the popular water coaster De Vliegende Hollander. After extensive maintenance work, the attraction will reopen on April 18, 2025, featuring a new scene and an improved photo spot. Additionally, the souvenir shop has been redesigned to offer visitors an even more immersive atmosphere. These enhancements amplify the experience of the dark legend surrounding the cursed captain.

New Scene Enhances the Dark Legend

One of the most striking changes affects Scene 10 of the attraction. In the previous version, Willem van der Decken’s face briefly appeared above riders before transforming into a skull. This has now been replaced by a more dramatic presentation: just before the boats ascend the lift hill, they are plunged into a surreal nightmare. Barrels and curtains hang in drifting smoke, as the boat comes to a halt in the middle of a burning shipwreck. This scene symbolizes the decayed soul of Willem van der Decken—an eerie place where visitors do not belong. Only when the boat begins its slow ascent can riders escape the ghostly ship and break free from the captain’s curse.

Extended Maintenance Allows for Major Enhancements

The routine maintenance of the attraction was extended this year to incorporate additional improvements. Besides the standard work, the track was sandblasted and recoated, enhancing durability and ride quality. This provided the opportunity to make adjustments to certain scenes. The previously difficult-to-access position of the captain’s head in Scene 10 had made maintenance a challenge. As a result, the team opted for a complete redesign, making the scene not only more accessible for upkeep but also more immersive for riders.

Virtual Reality Aids in Planning

To ensure the new scene met the highest standards, the Efteling team utilized modern technology. Before implementation, all changes were visualized in 3D. Using virtual reality, designers could assess whether their vision translated effectively into reality. This method allows for precise planning and last-minute refinements before construction. The frame for the new scene was entirely prefabricated outside the attraction, ensuring swift installation once maintenance work was completed. Decorative elements were also pre-produced. While the musical score remains unchanged, additional sound effects have been added to enhance realism.

Improved Photo Spot for Lasting Memories

After the ride, visitors can enjoy a revamped photo spot. The location has been adjusted to better capture the atmosphere of the attraction. Thanks to new camera technology, photos will now be taken in higher quality, allowing guests to preserve their memories in even greater detail. This enhancement makes the unique experience of De Vliegende Hollander even more impactful for visitors.

Redesigned Souvenir Shop for Themed Memorabilia

The souvenir shop at the exit of De Vliegende Hollander has also been modernized. The store now features a more spacious design, encouraging guests to linger in the world of the cursed ship. Themed merchandise inspired by the haunting tale of the captain is available in an expanded selection. Additionally, a new canopy has been added, further enhancing the ambiance and ensuring a cohesive thematic experience.

With these upgrades, De Vliegende Hollander will become even more immersive, offering a heightened experience of the legend surrounding the cursed captain from April 18, 2025. The attraction’s reopening not only marks the completion of maintenance but also the beginning of a fresh, even more thrilling ride for all Efteling visitors.
