The discovery of a part of a German munitions depot from World War II on the outskirts of Efteling amusement park sparked a debate on how to handle historical finds. The municipality of Loon op Zand has now decided that the remains can be removed.

Archaeological Finds Spark Discussions

Archaeological investigations last autumn uncovered the remains of a German munitions depot at Efteling, leading to a debate between historians, who advocated for the preservation of the find, and the amusement park, which preferred its removal.

The municipality decides

The municipality of Loon op Zand had to be assessed by experts, who concluded that the cellar under the depot canteen did not possess significant archaeological value. Based on this assessment, the municipality granted permission for its removal.

Information Board as a Possible Solution

Although the exact timing of the removal has not yet been determined, the feasibility of installing an information board near the site is being examined. This is intended to inform visitors about the historical significance of the find.

Balancing Preservation and Development

The decision to remove the World War II relics reflects the need to find a balance between preserving historical artifacts and further developing the amusement park. The consideration of setting up an information board demonstrates an effort to honor the site's history while making room for new developments.
