Efteling, one of the most renowned theme parks in Europe, has announced comprehensive renovation works for the iconic Sleeping Beauty's Castle. This castle, central to the park since its inception, will be closed for extensive maintenance in the upcoming months.
Redesign of Pathways and Access Areas
Fairytale enthusiasts will have to brace for temporary changes, as the Sleeping Beauty tale will be inaccessible during the renovation period. The traditional entrance to the Fairy Tale Forest via the famed "Witch's Gate" will also be restricted for the time being. However, there's a silver lining: A new wheelchair-accessible path will be established between Sleeping Beauty's Castle and the Miniature Diorama. While this new route will require the removal of some significant beech trees, it paves the way for an expansion of the existing pond, offering the area a fresh, new ambiance.
Core Renovation for Castle and Surroundings
The renovation will intensely focus on restoring the castle and redesigning its surrounding areas. Soon, scaffolding will envelop the castle, ensuring the historical walls and facades are expertly refurbished. The access roads to the castle, which have shown significant wear over the years, will also undergo redesign. Another focus is ecology: While some trees will be cut down to boost biodiversity, new plantings are planned in return. The castle's interior will also see improvements, with special attention given to sustainable LED lighting.
Revitalization of the Fairy Tale Forest
Beyond the Sleeping Beauty initiative, other fairy tale corners of Efteling Park are also getting revamped. In recent months, significant work has already been done on the Herautenplein and the Magical Clock. Figures and installations, like the three mushrooms of the Mushroom Village, the Troll King, and Longneck, have also received maintenance. A special mention goes to the little mermaid, slated for comprehensive restoration in early October, both aesthetically and technologically.
