Anaheim, California, stands on the brink of an unprecedented transformation. The renowned Disneyland Resort has announced its plans to invest over $2 billion in the region over the next decade. This groundbreaking initiative, known as DisneylandForward, aims to renew and extend the historic 1996 agreement that spearheaded a period of expansion in the late 1990s.

The New Era of Partnership: Disneyland and Anaheim Hand in Hand

The freshly presented agreement is more than an extension of the previous contract between the city of Anaheim and the Disneyland Resort; it's a promise for a flourishing future. The existing arrangement, originally set to expire in 2036, would be extended until 2064 with this new plan. DisneylandForward represents not just a modernization of land-use permits, but also a vision to enable innovative attractions and hotel facilities in current parking spaces.

Investments that Transform a Community

In the first ten years following the project's approval, Disneyland commits to investing at least $1.9 billion in new attractions, entertainment offerings, and accommodations. But the commitments go far beyond:

- Infrastructure Focus: $45 million is earmarked for road improvements in Anaheim.
- Strategic Acquisitions: $40 million will be invested in acquiring key thoroughfares such as Magic Way, Hotel Way, and parts of Clementine Street.
- Community Commitment: Additionally, Disney pledges investments in affordable housing projects, wastewater facility improvements, and the enhancement of urban parks.

Disney's Promise: More Than Just Entertainment

The Disneyland Resort demonstrates its commitment not only through financial investments. The company also emphasizes its responsibility towards its employees and the Anaheim community. This is reflected in the support of educational and development programs that will reach both the resort's staff and up to 10,000 Anaheim residents per year.

“Our DisneylandForward project is a response to the needs of the city of Anaheim. We are proud that this initiative will bring direct benefits to the residents,” states Ken Potrock, President of the Disneyland Resort.

Creating Connections: New Bridges for Enhanced Accessibility

A prominent feature of the development agreement is the construction of up to three pedestrian bridges over Harbor Boulevard and up to two more over Disneyland Drive. These bridges could significantly facilitate access to new attractions that may arise in today's parking areas west of Disneyland Drive. Potential new attractions could include themed areas for Frozen, Zootopia, Coco, and Wakanda from Marvel's “Black Panther.”

Looking Ahead: Next Steps for DisneylandForward

Official representatives from Disney and Anaheim have outlined the timeline for the next phases of DisneylandForward. A city planning commission workshop is expected next month, followed by a planning commission vote in March. A preliminary city council vote is scheduled for April, with a possible final approval in May.
