Beginning on January 6, 2025, Disneyland Paris will launch a comprehensive renovation of Big Thunder Mountain, one of the park’s most iconic attractions. The refurbishment will last until early summer 2025 and aims to visually and technically modernize the attraction without altering its original atmosphere and storyline. Multiple departments are collaborating to preserve the Gold Rush mine in Frontierland® for future generations.

Modernization of Wooden Structures for an Authentic Appearance

A key focus of the renovation is on the wooden structures that are crucial to the immersive atmosphere of Big Thunder Mountain. Teams from Walt Disney Imagineering Paris and Design & Delivery have carefully analyzed the wood used throughout the attraction and plan to replace damaged or worn elements with new, more durable materials. These replacements will be precisely crafted and meticulously painted to maintain the authentic, weathered look of the attraction. As part of these efforts, major areas such as the Mill Camp Tower, the mountain decor, and the station will undergo extensive restoration.

Meticulous Restoration of Animal Figures and Landscape

Special attention is being given to restoring the iconic animal figures, including Billy the goat and the mules. These figures are being painstakingly refurbished in the Central Workshops of Disneyland Paris to return them to their original condition. At the same time, the attraction’s vegetation will be renewed to create an authentic recreation of North American desert landscapes. This involves the use of genuine-looking cacti and other plants, based on archival materials from the attraction’s 1992 opening year.

Collaboration for the Highest Quality and Durability

The renovation of Big Thunder Mountain is a joint project between various departments, including Maintenance and the Central Workshop. These teams are working closely with Walt Disney Imagineering Paris to modernize the attraction to the highest standards. Throughout the process, preserving the attraction’s original creative vision remains a priority. The work covers every detail, from precision woodwork to optimizing the queue areas, ensuring an enhanced experience for both guests and Cast Members.

Big Thunder Mountain: A Pause for the “Wildest Ride in the West”

During its closure, the opportunity arises to thoroughly overhaul Big Thunder Mountain and ensure its long-term upkeep. Crews are working around the clock to complete the renovation in time for the summer season of 2025. The goal is to maintain the immersive Wild West feel of Frontierland® while meeting modern standards.

A Glimpse at Long-Term Goals

The renovation is not just a necessary step in maintaining the attraction; it is also a testament to Disneyland Paris’s commitment to preserving the quality and historical significance of its rides. By utilizing modern technologies and materials, Big Thunder Mountain remains a symbol of the park’s immersive experience and creative spirit.
